Hi, thanks for the information on the Philip Glass opera 'Akhnaten'. The beautiful black and white photographs were a wonderful piece of serendipity; after many years you have inspired me to take up printing my own again (while listening to the exquisite music of Philip Glass!) Thanks, Brian.

Thaks for a very informative and useful site for the PG collector. I would recommend, though it's a matter of taste, the soundtracks to Powaqqatsi and Koyaanisqatsi for the new collector. I much prefer that material ans Solo Piano to Songs form Liquid days which I did not really enjoy. I agree with your choice of Mishima and Dancepieces. Thanks again.

Brian, I notice that your site has changed greatly. The Phillip Glass forum seems to be working as well as a finely tuned Starch piano! (That's what I have sitting in my living room. circa 1920, last tuned in about 1980.) No slur intended. I am not tone deaf, but my piano playing leaves much to be desired. If you'd like, we could play together again sometime?

Excellent job on the Glass sight. I appreciate your in depth analysis of his works and the hidden complexity within them. So many people are quick to judge based on a couple of minutes of music and what others say. Thanks you for doing this musical innovator some justice.

I'm fascinated by Glass' rediscovery of the basic principle of the Schillinger System of Musical Composition, first published in 1941 in 12 books; the idea that 2 or more rhythmic patterns played together produce yet a 3rd pattern. (See Schillinger: Book 1, Theory Of Rhythm, Interferences Of Periodicities).I'm fascinated by the way in which "new" ideas are "discovered" by those who don't bother to do their homework. Schillinger was a major, very influential musical theorist of his time who has, strangely, been largely forgotten today. Gershwin studied with him for 4 years. Porgy & Bess was largely written under Schillinger's influence & instruction. Forgive me for going on so about this but, as an authorized teacher of the Schillinger System and a professional musician of long experience, I'm interested in setting the record straight. Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, Whose breath
gives life to all the world. Hear me; I need your strength and
wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and
purple
sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my
ears sharp
to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the
things you
have taught my people. Help me to remain calm and strong in the
face of
all that comes towards me. Let me learn the lessons you have
hidden in
every leaf and rock. Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the
intention
of helping others. Help me find compassion without empathy
overwhelming
me. I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight
my
greatest enemy MYSELF. Make me always ready to come to you
with clean
hands and straight eyes.

So when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my spirit may come to you without shame.

Sitting at my workstation hammering out resumes (I'm an out of work LEGO designer--company had a bad year last year--now I'm having a bad year this year!)and listening to the new Koyaanisqatsi recording and I thinks to meself "Damn--I've been listening to this crap since the Tomato days--almost 20 years-and I never get tired of it. Gotta see if that man has an e-mail address so I can tell him how much I love his stuff. Did a search under the name and you came up. Very nice site! So how do I get in touch with Mr. Glass? I don't give a horses hinder about the pro and con fights about this man's music. I have pretty sophisticated tastes (I was breathing Ives and Carter at age 15) and he keeps me happy consistently. Anyone who doesn't like him is an idjit. So, are you actually in Australia? COOL!

I really enjoyed your site, and found it most interesting. I'm a BA honours music student attempting to do an essay on Glass, and your information will be most useful to me. However, I need a bit more information about your sources , so that I can use this info in my work. If possible could you send me this, via the address above. Cheers!!!!

I just discover Philip Glass music, and as a classical opera lover I found these modern operas light, powerfull, delicate...much more than french modern operas 'listenable'like "starmania", or "notre dame de paris". French are expecting Philip Glass in France, in order to listen to a live concert...

After I had seen the Philip Glass bit on South Park I liked the sound of his music and ever since then I've wanted to find out more about him and your's is the best page that I have seen so far and the gallery pictures are amazing and they seem to have some sort of depth to them which makes them better to look at them for longer althought I cannot say what this depth is as it's unexplainable. I'm going to seen if I can get hold of a Philip Glass CD to really see what his music is really like !! I'll visit again soon !!

Too many questions regarding too many topics... That is the anti-reason I enjoyed your site so much. I tried to hightlight my reasons for being (staying) here, but was only allowed one entry. Initially entered Brian's page, then gallery, then P. Glass, then gave up and just hit 'idle'. You have a fine site that has much to offer. Thanks for being a source that brings the level of the net up a notch! A.P.

Green Jell-O has been considered socially offensive since the '60's, when first introduced to the general American public by Bill Cosby. It is only now in 1998, that the growing movement to ban that particular wiggly flavor has gained support in popular political circles. It seems that the current USA president, Bill Clinton disfavors the lime flavor, but not certainly its color, the color of (a dollar) money.

Interesting and novel. Not bad for an amateur. [Amateur? Another piece I like is 'Einstein on the Beach' which was performed at the Melbourne Festival about a year or two before Leo Schofield became Festival Director. The performance was quite unique. It lasted five hours, combining music, ideas, movement and visual sets which looked like art works. A rare and exciting experience. Saima

I too am a huge fan. I saw him on politically correct and he was as fascinating as ever. Others don't always "click" with him because his mind is too advanced. I have too a vast collection. And cherish the condert ticket he autographed for me at Place Des Arts when I chatted with him backstage. It was a great thrill to be in the presence of this genious. He is like an ordinary guy physically, but his presence and his genious radiates. wow. We all go through phases- these days I've been hitting the Satyagraha hard. You? - Dave

Hi Brian! I am Jordi Petit i Silvestre, one of the creators of GlassPages, Philip Glass on the Web. I would like to inform you that we are currently updating our Links page and that we will surely put a link to your page about Philip Glass. As soon as the new Links page of our site is ready we will email it to you.

I would like also to give you some news from our site. First of all, and I am sure you will be happy about it, we have now a new official mirror of GlassPages. It is located in Germany and has a high bandwidth. Moreover, GlassPages have been updated a little bit in order to load faster, even the size of the images are now included in the source. The main page has also changed dramatically, it now offers a Windows 95 look and fits in one small screen. The mirror is located at:

http://www.uni-paderborn.de/~pg/glass.html

As you see, we at GlassPages tried to solve the problems you noticed in our pages. In fact, we received many similar comments. So, thanks for indirectly helping us to improve our site. And, please, update the information about GlassPages that is stated in your links.

Best regards and congratulations for your original page.

Enjoyed your web site, especially the reference to Philip Glass. I am a composer also. My style is not quite minimalist, but combines minimalism with contemporary and ethnic sounds. I studied composition and percussion performance at West Virginia University, but am now trying to find "my own voice" in the musical world. Not much of my work has been performed yet, but hopefully the future will turn that around. Just thought you would like to hear from yet another Brian Stewart. Best Wishes Always!!!

It is the 29th of May 1996 at 21.30, and we are located at the Flinders University library (my old haunt - BPS). I had better let your brother make a comment. Will catch you on the net - Maryanne.

Well....Well....Well... If I were a tax payer I would be asking for my money "bach". I always thought that when you told me you worked hard it was true!? (It Is! - BPS) Anyway we have just landed on here and I want to explore your page before we run out of time, especially Calum's school reports!

P.S. Did that fax I sent get through or not, (yes - BPS) if not I want to know who the dummy was that threw it out!!!!!!
