The Gallery of Fine Black and White Images

Other Online Photographic Galleries
and Related Creative Resources

Welcome

This page started like many others - with something completely different in mind. I started this page partly because I had become aware of other galleries which I felt were worth publicising. Some I stumbled across through the alt.photo.* newsgroups, and some because there were people that had contacted me to comment on my gallery and to tell me that they had put links from their gallery or creative site to mine. However list number of galleries I stumbled across (predictably) grew much faster than my ability to catalogue them. Nowadays there are plenty of better places with lists of photographic sites, and of course there is always Google. A traditional starting point is:

Bengt Hallinger's Photo Exhibitions and Archives

This page here is, or at least is going to become, a modest collection of selected like galleries which I recommend or found rather interesting or worthy of comment. Most but not all pages are photographic galleries. A few are sites of genuine artistic creativity in other fields. Recommendations for additions to this page are always welcome.

GALLERIES

The Eye of the Low Countries    *

This is an excellent photographic site, mostly B&W, which cannot be recommended too highly. This quote from the site gives a good description. "On these pages you will find recent work of photojournalists and press-photographers from the Netherlands and Belgium. Most of them are freelance; some of them work for a newspaper or magazine. The pictures here have been chosen by themselves. Some of these pictures never made it to a newspaper and are shown here now for the first time. This 'exhibition' has no commercial intention. There is no contest, nor any competition. She just shows what kind of pictures Dutch and Belgian photojournalists make nowadays. I change the pictures often; so log in frequently to see the newest additions.

The Cafe Society International Photo Exhibition   *

A first class photography site. A genuine online gallery. Many different photographers and images. My only reservation is the speed of the site, especially given the size of some of the images. "Welcome once again to this unique and exciting gallery forum and exhibition circuit. These galleries are playing host to work from Hull, Holland, France, Belgium and America. The galleries are constantly show casing new work."

Western Echoes - Jerry Olsen   *

Western Echoes Logo

Another first class photography site. One that makes me jealous. There are some quality black and white landscape photos of the US here (don't let the colour logo fool you). More photos that here at CyberHalides. If I am honest, probably better photos. It is not surprising given Jerry's background:"Jerry Olson is a North Dakota Native, and has been a photographer and artist for the past 35 years. He was a photographer's mate in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1964, where he first served at the Naval Air Station in Beeville, Texas, then at the Subic Bay Photo Lab in the Phillipines, and finally aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany aircraft carrier as a Photographer's Mate Petty Officer. He attended the University of North Dakota in preparation for his training at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Professional Arts. He has been a photographer and graphic artist at the University of North Dakota for the past 30 years. He has been taking landscape photographs for nearly 35 years."   Worth a look. A long look.

Discovering the Children of Bangladesh - Ihtisham Kabir    *

This is not the flashest of web sites, and under normal circumstances it would not make it into this list, but the quality and the sheer power of these portrait photographs is breathtaking. If you visit no other site on this page, look at this one. Perhaps a plain site is best for these images. In addition, he has managed to get a good balance between image size, file size and on-screen image quality.

a bAD hABIT   *

This is a real quality site by an emerging young photographer with a sharp eye, a good sense of imagination, a Nikon FE, and a cagey old photographic mentor (me!).

Deserted Farms in Black and White - photographybyNökkvi Elíasson   *

A (bilingual) web site from Iceland is a rarity, and one as interesting as this a double rarity. These are dark and brooding images from a place that few of us will ever get to. "Here you will see some of the photograhs Ive taken of deserted farms for the past years. This subject has been my main interest for the last 10 or 12 years (which should tell you that Im far from being normal!). For now you can see about 25 photos." Also landscape and some portraiture images. A nicely designed and interesting site.

Art VISiOns - Web Garage Gallery   *

It may seem strange putting this site in this list, as there are only a few black & white photographs there, but I did so for three reasons. First, There are some real quality original images here in my view. Congratulations to Stefano Visona' from Lonigo, a small town in the "Italian Silicon Valley" (even though the web server is in Hollywood). Second, I like the attitude. Third, he has a cross link to the pointer to my primary site on his link pages.

IO the Musician   *

This too is top quality site. It is not a photographic site. What is does contain is quality, original, modern compositions in the Glass style. Admire some genuine creativity in another field.

Handmade Photographic Images by George L Smyth   *

This is a site that I had accidentally and seriously underrated until the owner drew to my attention that I had overlooked the bulk of his site. There are some very good images here, which demonstrate both traditional technique and a variety of alternative techniques. This site also contains extensive information on infrared, pinhole and other alternative techniques, and may change your mind on the potential of some of these techniques. In my view this site has two minor drawbacks. One, the entry page focuses more on alternative technique information than on the gallery, although whether you view this as a drawback will depend on what you went there looking for. Two, in my view the file size of the images is a bit large for browsing. Nonetheless definitely worth a look, but scroll down to the bottom half of the entry page to get into George's gallery.

Photographs by Dan Cardish   *

A good site with quite a number of images and varied galleries of image styles. XXX.

Australian Wilderness Photo Gallery, by Peter Sundstrom   *

A very good Australian site of colour images of the Australian wilderness and National Parks, in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania from a number of his bushwalking and ski touring trips. Galleries include: Skiing, Bushwalking and Huts. A good number of good images, well organised and presented. The only real drawback is that they are all in colour, which limited the interest to me. Peter is also the author of the CGI script that I use for CyberHalides PhotoCards. Send a digital postcard from either this gallery or his.

The Hans Roggen Photography website   *

An excellent individual photographic website from the Netherlands, containing a range of colour and black and white images, with only one serious drawback. The thumbnails are really fullsized images resized in your browser. This site is associated with The Eye of the Low Countries site reviewed above.

Black and White ArtZone   *

Another site dedicated to Black and White. Not that many images, and large image files, but a good site nonetheless. Apart from the fact that second and subsequent images for each artist are hard to find (look for coloured spots at the bottom of each page), excellent site design. Be prepared to experiment in navigation.

Andre Leon Pauquette's Online Gallery   *

I do rather like original creativity, and this site contains it. There are 5 pages to view, each with thumbnails of several original colour images, and each of them uses a different technique or process to produce a rather non-traditional image. Full sized images are well worth viewing, but can be slow.

David Krueger's City Shadows Photographic Gallery   *

A collection of interesting images, which observe people and the city environment in the tradition of Eisenstaedt, and which show good technique. Very creative site branding.

The Penultimate Pinhole Photography Page   *

Pinhole photography has always been photography's poor cousin. But if your idea of pinholes is those scrappy experiments you did back at school, this site will change your mind. There are some really appealing images here, some in colour, and the site is well laid out. A bit of a novelty, but definitely worth a look.

Bob Shomler   *

Nice site of colour images of ballet and opera and some other miscellaneous images

Daniel Chase Photography   *

Black and white landscapes and colour travel photographs of Santa Barbara, CA.

ZINES

I decided to keep online Photography magazines separate from galleries, even though the distinction is sometimes less than clear. Partly because I found them harder to rate

Zerozine   *

Clearly this site is also more than just a gallery. Another whole online 'zine which includes photography and poetry. This one includes discussion groups and can be subscribed to by email.

Nordic Camera - Photography, Design and Travel Magazine!    *

Another online photographic magazine.

NO-NOs

There is one site that I should warn you about:

Peter's Gallery   *

In the interests of good taste, please avoid this site at all costs.
